상류층인 릴리브르의 집에서 일하는 가정부 소피는 릴리브르 부부와 버릇없는 두 아이를 위해 열심히 일한다. 자신이 글을 읽지 못한다는 사실을 숨기기 위해 갖은 노력을 기울이던 소피는 정열적이며 직설적인 우체국 직원 잔느와 친구가 되는데, 잔느는 그녀에게 쇼핑 리스트를 읽어주기도 하고 릴리브르 가족에 대한 온갖 이야기들을 들려주기도 한다. 잔느가 자신의 우편물을 훔쳐보고 있다고 생각하는 릴리브르씨는 소피에게 잔느가 4살짜리 소녀를 살해했다는 혐의를 받은 적이 있으니 조심하라고 이야기하는데…
