스코틀랜드의 경찰 닐 하위는 어느 날 ‘서머아일’이라는 한 외딴 섬에서 한 소녀가 실종되었다는 신고를 받고 그 섬으로 가게 된다. 그곳은 고대 드루이드 신앙을 믿는 주민들이 모여 사는 폐쇄적인 공동체로 주민들은 외지인인 닐에게 경계심을 품는다. 그럼에도 닐은 소녀를 꼭 찾겠다는 마음으로 섬 이곳저곳을 돌아다니다 섬의 특이한 풍습들을 마주하게 되고, 독실한 기독교 신자로서 본인의 세계관, 종교관과 맞지 않는 마을 풍습에 크게 불편함을 느낀다. 게다가 마침 그 해는 섬에 흉년이 찾아온 터라 닐은 소녀가 인신공양의 희생 제물이 될 지도 모른다는 것을 확신하고 소녀를 구하기 위해 분투하는데..
