유명한 외인부대를 무대로 한 남녀의 운명을 묘사한 고전 작품. 명문가의 아들인 피에르는 애인 플로렌스와 방탕한 나날을 보내던 중 파산에 이르러 가문에서 외국으로 쫓겨난다. 그는 외인부대에 지원해 남 아프리카에서 행복하지 않은 생활을 하던 중 어느 허름한 호텔에서 블랑슈라는 여주인을 만나 카드점을 본다. 작은 바에 친구와 놀러간 그는 옛 애인 플로렌스와 닮은 여급 이르마를 보고 놀라게 된다. 피에르는 이르마를 데리고 블랑슈의 호텔에서 생활하게 되고 플로렌스를 생각나게 하는 행동을 하는 이르마를 보며 피에르는 혼란스러워 한다.
