간절히 원했던 것이 욕망이 되고, 결국 그것이 파멸을 부른다! 믿음직스러운 그대의 이름은, 윌리 스탁 미국 메이슨 시티의 곧고 신념 강한 재정관인 윌리 스탁. 윌리 스탁은 학교 건설 입찰 비리를 고발하여 유명세를 얻게 된다. 그 유명세를 이용하려던 사람들로 인해 자극받은 윌리 스탁은 스스로 루지애나 주지사 선거에 나가 힘있고 부패한 자들을 처단하고자 결심한다. 하지만 윌리 스탁 역시 권력의 유혹에 빠져드는데… 윌리 스탁은 거침없는 언변과 관중을 집중시키는 카리스마로 많은 사람들의 지지를 받게 되었고 마침내 주지사로 당선된다. 하지만 시민들을 위한 공약을 지키기 위해서는 기득권층의 세금을 크게 올려야 했고 이 때문에 그는 권력층과 부유층에 대립할 수밖에 없게 된다. 결국 기득권층의 사람들은 그를 탄핵하기로 결정한다. 윌리 스탁은 자신의 자리를 지키기 위해 점점 그들처럼 비열해지는데…
