슈퍼마켓의 어시스턴트 매니저인 제리 랜더스(존 덴버 분)는 선한 성격의 사람이지만 종교를 갖고 있지 않다. 어느 날 갑자기 그는 편지통에서 쪽지 하나를 발견한다. 그 쪽지의 내용은 하나님(조지 번즈 분)과의 인터뷰를 허락한다는 황당한 내용이다. 누가 장난친 것이라고 생각한 제리는 그 쪽지를 그냥 버린다. 그러나 그 쪽지가 다시 그에게 나타나자 그는 그것을 주머니에 넣는다. 처음에는 무신론자였던 그였지만, 쪽지 사건 이후 하나님이 우리에게 주신 것을 가지고 세계를 변화시킬 수 있다고 믿게 되고, 이를 전파하는 메신저가 된다. 그러나 그를 바라보는 세상 사람들에게 미친 사람 취급을 받는 등 각종 어려움을 겪게 된다.
