갱단의 두목인 스냅스는 1930년대를 주름잡는 밀주업가이다. 악명을 드높이던 그가 아버지 임종난 '착한 일을 해서 가문의 명예를 빛내라'는 유언을 지키기로 약속하면서, 인생 전환의 기회를 맞게된다. 쇠뿔도 당긴김에 빼듯, 다음날부터 새마음 새뜻으로 합법적인 사업가가 되기로 마음먹는데, 세상은 요지경으로 그를 혼란에 빠뜨린다. 먼저 그의 전속 회계사가 그의 재산 일부를 횡령하여 그의 딸과의 결혼을 들먹인다. 딸은 어이없게도 한때 그의 운전기사였던 오스카(Oscar: 짐 뮤홀랜드 분)와의 결혼을 고집하고, 경찰은 뇌물을 요구하고, 전속 재단사까지 그를 속이려 든다. 과연뛰는 놈위에 나는놈 있는법, 세상이 거꾸로 돌아가는지, 자기가 거꾸로살아가는지, 어안이 벙벙할 뿐인 스냅스에게 더욱 황당한 사건이 터지는데...
