두 번의 이혼경력이 있는 30대 중반의 영국 여인 조(앤 밴크로프트分)는 여섯 명의 아이와 함께 살아가던 중 풋내기 시나리오 작가 제이크(피터 핀치)을 만나게 된다. 조는 제이크와 결혼하기 위해 남편과 헤어지고, 아버지의 재정적인 도움을 받아 부족함 없는 새 출발을 하게 된다. 넓은 집과 자상한 남편, 뒤뜰을 소란스럽게 돌아다니며 장난치는 아이들의 모습을 바라보며 행복의 절정을 느끼는 조. 하지만 제이크가 작가로서 성공을 거두고 다른 여자들과 어울리면서 조는 신경쇠약과 우울증에 시달리다가 정신과 치료까지 받게 된다. 얼마 후 조는 제이크에게 임신했다는 사실을 알리지만 제이크는 조에게 임신중절수술과 불임수술까지 권유하고 조는 행복한 결혼생활을 위해 남편의 권유를 받아들이지만 얼마 지나지 않아 제이크의 위선과 거짓을 목격하고 제이크에게 무의미한 질문을 던진다. ‘나와 결혼한 이유가 뭔가요?’, ‘우린 앞으로 어떻게 될 것 같나요?’
