피아니스트로 생계를 유지하기 위해 에디 듀친(타이론 파워) 는 유명한 센트럴 파크 카지노의 오케스트라 지휘자, 라이스먼을 찾아갔다. 이전에 듀친이 파크셔의 피서지에서 연주했을 때 라이스먼이 칭찬을 아끼지 않았기 때문이다. 그러나 아무리 라이스먼이라도 그를 바로 취직시켜줄 수는 없었다. 기대가 이루어지지 않아 실망한 듀친은 순간 눈에 들어온 피아노 앞에 앉아 쓸쓸한 마음으로 치기 시작한다.
