가난한 어린 시절을 보낸 조는 현재 거물 갱스터 터커 밑에서 변호사로 일하고 있다. 터커는 숫자 도박의 번호를 조작해 거금을 손에 넣으려 하고, 조는 이 사실을 알고 마음에 갈등을 느낀다. 아브라함 폴론스키 감독의 데뷔작. 이후 감독은 반국가행위조사위원회에서 증언을 거부함으로써 블랙리스트에 올랐고, 가명을 쓰는 등 연출 활동에 제한을 받아야 했다.
