영국의 앵글로 색슨 족을 정복한 노르만 족의 왕 리처드 1세(노만 울란드)는 용맹스럽다 하여 '사자왕'이란 별명을 가지고 있다. 앵글로 족의 기사 아이반호는 그를 모시고 십자군 원정에 참가하고, 그 사이 영국은 리처드 1세의 동생 존이 왕위를 찬탈하기에 이른다. 전쟁이 끝난 후, 이들이 돌아왔다는 소식은 들려오지 않고, 노르만 족의 앵글로 색슨 족에 대한 차별은 심해진다. 한편, 유태계 부자 아이작과 그의 아름다운 딸 레베카는 숲속에서 존왕의 부하들에게 납치당하다가, 아이반호의 도움으로 간신히 도망친다. 아이작의 엄청난 부를 노린 존왕의 계략을 벗어난 그들은 추적을 피해 어디론가 간다. 마침내 충성스런 기사 아이반호와 셔우드숲의 의적 로빈 훗이 의기투합하여 존왕을 밀어내고, 다시 리처드 1세를 옹립한다.
