옥스퍼드 대학에서 철학을 가르치던 아이리스 머독은 영문학 강사인 존 베일리를 만난다. 자유분방한 아이리스를 보며 존은 갈등을 겪지만 결국 결혼하여 40여 년 간 영국 최고의 지성인 커플로 함께 고락을 나누며 해로한다. 어느덧 노년이 된 부부. 아이리스에게 갑자기 알츠하이머 증세가 찾아온다. 그녀는 자신의 정신세계가 점차 무너져가고 있음을 알고 두려움에 떨고, 존은 치매에 걸린 아이리스를 헌신적으로 돌본다. 5년 동안 투병생활을 하던 아이리스은 최악의 상황에 이르고 특수 요양원으로 보내진다. 아이리스는 이곳에서 조용히 숨을 거둔다.
