제２차 대전, 오키나와 전에서 부상해 기억상실에 걸린 조지 테일러는 퇴역 후 진짜 자신의 모습을 찾기로 했다. 출정 전에 살고 있던 로스앤젤레스의 호텔에서 이름 없이 맡겨 놓았던 가방을 받는다. 그 안엔 권총과 “버트”라고 하는 인물로부터 그의 명의로 은행에서 5000 달러 찾으라고 하는 편지가 들어가 있었다. 테일러는 은행에 가 돈을 인출하려고 하나 행원이 의심스러워하자 도망친다. “버트”를 만나고 싶었지만 아무도 그를 모른다고 한다. 「셀러」라고 하는 클럽에 가면 버트를 알지도 모른다고 하는 말을 믿고, 클럽에 가지만….
