태평양 한가운데, 수심 수백 미터 아래에서 유에프오가 발견되어 미국 정부는 각 분야 전문가를 동원해 팀을 꾸린다. 심리학자 노먼(더스틴 호프먼)은 정부로부터 급한 호출을 받고 팀에 합류한다. 팀의 구성원은 노먼의 옛연인었던 생화학자 베스 헬파린(샤론 스톤)과 수학자 해리 애덤스(새뮤얼 L. 잭슨), 천채 물리학자 테드(리브 슈라이버)이다. 탐사팀은 미항공 우주국 소속의 비밀요원 반즈(피터 코요테 )의 지휘하에 유에프오에 접근한다. 해저 300미터에 설치된 해군기지에 머물며 탐사를 하는 이들은, 탐사 결과 우주선이 미래 지구로부터 왔다는 사실을 알아내는데...
