뉴욕에서 고향으로 돌아와 건축업을 하는 클린트는 아내 조애나가 시골 생활에 염증을 느낀데다 아이마저 생기지 않아 갈등을 겪고 있었다. 그러던 중 조애나는 의사인 오웬과 밀회를 갖는데 오웬이 원하는 것은 조애나의 사랑이 아니라 클린트의 재산이었다. 마침내 오웬과 조애나는 클린트를 죽이려는 무서운 음모를 꾸미고, 조애나는 이를 실행에 옮기는데 독극물의 양이 치사량에 못 미쳐서 두 사람의 계획은 수포로 돌아가 버리고, 사랑하는 아내에게 배신당한 클린트의 무서운 복수가 시작된다.
