버니는 TV 네트워크를 관리하는 연방 방송국의 연구부를 통솔하는 아주 유능한 직원이다. 그러던 어느날 사장은 이 부서에 컴퓨터를 할당해놓고 리차드에게 버니의 부서에서 매일매일 활동을 잘 감시하도록 지시한다. 그러자 컴퓨터가 모든 직원을 대신하게 되어 직원들이 해고당할 위기에 처하게 된다. 날이 갈수록 문제는 심각해져서 버니와 리차드 사이에 극도의 긴장감이 감돌기 시작한다. 결국 버니와 직원들은 컴퓨터가 해결하지 못하는 어려운 문제들을 해결해 나가고 컴퓨터는 복잡한 문제를 해결하느라 덜덜덜 거리다가 마침내 고장나 버린다.
