독일과의 전쟁 중인 상황. 시를 쓰는 딜런(매튜 리스)과 노래하는 베라(키이라 나이틀리)는 고향 친구 사이로 오랜만에 재회한다. 둘은 서로를 사랑하지만 딜런에겐 아이까지 낳은 아내 케이틀린(시에나 밀러)이 있고, 베라에겐 그녀의 노래에 반해 구애하기 시작하는 윌리엄(킬리언 머피)이 있다. 넷은 함께 어울리게 되고 미묘한 감정들이 그들 사이에 맴돌게된다. 결국 베라는 윌리엄과 결혼하여 새로운 사랑을 시작한다. 하지만 군인인 윌리엄은 전쟁터로 떠나며 베라와 잠시 이별하게 되는데... (유가작가님 제공)
