미국의 브룩클린에 맥스(에디 머피 분)라는 이름의 뱀파이어가 나타나 자신의 짝을 찾는다. 한편, 인간과 뱀파이어 사이에서 태어난 여경찰 리타(안젤라 바세트 분)는 출생에 대해 전혀 모르는 채 매일밤 악몽에 시달리고 있다. 맥스가 나타난 이후 더욱 더 악몽에 시달리며, 주위에 심상치 않은 기운마저 감지하게 되는 리타. 괴이한 사건들이 계속 발생하는 가운데 리타는 더욱 혼란스러워지고, 맥스는 부하를 만들어 리타의 행방을 찾게 된다. 리타에게 소중한 것들을 모두 빼앗아 그녀가 스스로 자신을 찾아오도록 음모를 꾸미는 맥스. 리타는 동료이자 애인인 저스티스가 외도를 했다는 오해를 하게 되고, 맥스는 곤경에 빠진 그녀를 따뜻한 말과 행동으로 위로하며 유혹하는데...
