샌디에이고로 향하던 제프와 에이미는 텍사스 근처 고속도로에서 갑자기 자동차 시동이 꺼지고 만다. 난감해하던 이들 부부 앞에 낯선 남자가 나타난다. 컨테이너 운전사 레드는 에이미를 도움을 청할 수 있는 곳에 데려다 주기로 하고 함께 떠난다. 수리공을 기다리다가 혼자 자동차를 수리하는데 성공한 제프는 에이미를 만나기 위해 마을로 가지만 그 곳에 아내의 모습은 보이지 않는다. 에이미의 행방을 찾던 제프, 그녀를 데려갔던 레드를 만나지만 그는 모르는 일이라며 시치미를 뗀다. 제프는 경찰과 마을 사람들에게 아내가 납치됐음을 알리지만 그의 말을 믿기는커녕 미친 사람 취급한다. 어찌할 바를 모르는 제프에게 에이미의 몸값을 요구하는 전화가 걸려오는데...
