저명한 학자 피에르는 ‘발자크와 돈’이라는 강연을 위해 리스본으로 향한다. 리스본행 비행기에서 그는 스튜어디스 니콜을 눈여겨본다. 피에르는 니콜과 우연히 호텔에서 재회하고, 둘은 곧 깊은 관계로 빠져든다. 결국 피에르는 아내와 딸을 떠나기로 결심한다. 트뤼포 자신이 시나리오 작업을 위해 모아둔 흥미로운 사건들 중에서 아이디어를 얻었다고 한다. 카트린 드뇌브의 친자매로 트뤼포의 연인이기도 했지만, 불의의 사고로 요절한 프랑수아즈 도를레악이 니콜 역을 맡았다.
