과대 망상증에 걸린 버팔로 빌 코디는 작가 네드 버트라인이 쓰고 연출자 네이트 세일즈베리가 끼어 맞춘 얘기로 자신의 "웨스턴 쇼"를 만들어낸다. 이 쇼에서는 백인들이 미개한 인디언들보다 우세하다는 걸 보여주면서 관객들이 자신을 존경하고 자신이 만든 상품을 구매하도록 만드는 전략을 세운다. 하지만 시팅 불이 이 쇼에 참여하면서 쇼는 거짓뿐이고 진실만이 관객을 사로잡을 수 있다고 그를 설득하려고 한다. 하지만 진실이 어떻든 간에 관객들을 기쁘게 하고 자신의 사리사욕만 채우면 다라고 생각한 버팔로 빌 코디는 이 말을 전혀 귀담아듣지 않는다. 그러던 중 인디언이라고 무시했던 시팅 불의 진면목을 보게 되면서 실망을 하게 되는데.
