1960년, 19살의 스튜어트는 록 밴드 '비틀즈'의 탄생 무렵 베이시스트로 참가하여 연주지인 함부르크에서 연상의 여류사진가 아스트리드와 격정적인 사랑에 빠진다. 친구 존 레논도 질투할 정도로 두 사람은 만난지 3개월만에 약혼하고, 서로 사랑하는 행복한 나날을 보낸다. 그러나 스튜어트는 자신이 병들어 있음을 알게 되고 스스로 비틀즈를 떠난다. 비틀즈는 유명해져가는 반면 스튜어트는 심한 고통에 시달리면서 모든 신경과 온 힘을 그림과 아스트리드를 향한 사랑에 바친다. 그리고 수개월후인 4월 10일, 아스트리드의 품 안에서 숨을 거둔다. 단 한마디 '미안해'를 남기고. 스튜어트 21살, 아스트리드 24살이었다. 명성을 얻은 비틀즈가 개선 공연을 위해 함부르크에 도착하기 수시간 전의 일이었다.
