앤디 캐스퍼는 일류 광고 회사에서 마케팅을 담당하는 전도 유망한 청년이었지만, 모든 이들의 삶에 도움을 주는 뭔가를 만들고 싶다는 열망에 사로잡혀 사표를 내고 '라 혼다'연구소에 입사한다. 출근 첫 날, 연구소 최고의 실력자인 프랜시스는 앤디가 판매가 99달러짜리 휴대용 컴퓨터 개발에 성공하면, 그를 핵심 프로젝트 '타이탄'팀에 넣어 주겠다고 제안한다. 앤디가 맡게 될 프로젝트는 연구소에서 전혀 관심을 갖지 않는 유명무실한 것. 앤디는 좌절하지 않고 팀원을 찾아 나선 끝에 누구도 거들떠 보지 않던 살만 파드, 타이니, 대럴 등으로 팀을 구성한다. 남들이 보기에는 오합지졸 같은 앤디의 팀들은 밤낮으로 머리를 맞대 연구에 몰두하고, 도저히 불가능할 것만 같았던 판매가 99달러짜리 컴퓨터의 실체를 향해 다가간다.
