한 소년이 유괴되고 몸값을 요구하는 킬러 크록과 배트맨의 한판 대결로 시작된다. 그 싸움의 와중에 돈가방을 살짝 빼간 이는 다름 아닌 캣우먼. 그녀를 쫓던 배트맨은 배트로프가 끊어지는 바람에 두개골 골절이라는 큰 부상을 입게 된다. 겨우 구출된 그를 수술하러 달려온 사람은 브루스의 어린시절 친구이자 저명한 의사인 토머스 엘리엇. 브루스와 토머스는 오랜만에 재회한다. 그리고 얼굴을 붕대로 감싼 미스테리의 인물 - 허쉬(HUSH)가 이 모든 과정을 조용히 지켜보고 있다.
