2차 대전이 끝날 무렵 헨리 파버(도널드 서덜랜드)는 '바늘'이라는 이름으로 라디오 통신을 이용해 나치에 정보를 전달하는 스파이다. 연합군의 중요한 정보를 가지고 히틀러에게 가던 그는 배가 부서지는 바람에 외딴 섬으로 흘러 들어간다. 이 섬에 사는 사람은 등대지기와 젊은 부부, 그리고 부부의 어린 아들이 고작이다. 다리를 잃은 후 알코올 중독에 빠져 허송 세월을 보내는 남편에게 질린 여인(케이트 넬리건)은 새로운 인물 헨리에게 매력을 느끼게 되는데...
