추리소설 작가 필립(Phil Blackwood: 톰 셀릭 분)은 더 이상 소설을 쓸 소재가 없다. 얘깃거리를 건지러간 법원에서 살인 용의자로 법정에선 미모의 루마니아 처녀 니나(Nina: 폴리나 폴리즈코바 분)에게 첫눈에 끌린다. 근사한 소설을 쓸 욕심에 니나에게 알리바이를 제공하고 자기의 집으로 데리고 온다. 알리바이는 만들어 줬지만 그녀가 살인범일지도 모른다는 불안과 또한편으로 그녀에게 끌리는 자신을 발견한다. 벌써 필립은 니나를 모델삼아 쓴 책 속에서 스위프트 탐정이 되어 있는 것이다. 니나가 온 이후로 글은 일사천리로 써지고 둘은 이제 어느덧 서로 사랑하는 사이가 되었다. 그러나 그녀가 살인범일지도 모른다는 강박관념은 필립을 쉽게 안심시켜 주지 못하고 결국 니나는 소설을 읽고 필립이 자신을 의심한다는 것을 알고 그를 떠나는데.
