스코틀랜드의 전사 맥베스(마이클 패스벤더)는 뱅코(패디 콘시딘)와 함께 전쟁에서 이기고 돌아오는 길에 정체 모를 세 마녀를 만난다. 그들은 맥베스가 코다의 영주와 미래의 왕이 되고, 뱅코의 자손이 왕이 될 것이라고 예언한다. 승전의 공을 인정받아 코다의 영주가 된 맥베스는 마녀들의 예언이 들어맞았다는 걸 깨닫고 왕이 되겠다는 야망에 휩싸인다. 맥베스의 아내(마리옹 코티아르)는 덩컨 왕에 대한 충심으로 고민하는 맥베스를 힐책한다. 맥베스는 자신의 구역을 방문한 덩컨 왕이 잠들어 있는 사이 그를 살해하고, 결국 왕좌를 차지한다.
