1968년 발매된 데뷔 앨범 「뮤직 프롬 빅 핑크 Music from Big Pink」부터 1976년 고별 공연 실황 음반인 「더 라스트 왈츠 The Last Waltz」에 이르기까지, 캐나다 출신의 ‘더 밴드’는 컨트리 록을 대표하는 최고의 밴드였다. 밥 딜런의 백 밴드로 이미 명성을 얻었던 이들은 에릭 클랩튼이 듣고 충격을 받아 자신의 밴드 ‘크림’을 해산했다는 이야기가 전해지는 데뷔 앨범을 통해 시작부터 확고한 위치를 갖게 됐다. 하지만 멤버들이 온갖 구설에 오르내리며 결국 해산을 결정했고, 이들의 마지막 공연은 마틴 스코세이지에 의해 다큐멘터리로 제작된다. 시대를 풍미한 더 밴드의 성공과 그들의 내리막이 리더 로비 로버트슨의 회고와 함께 펼쳐진다.
