1907년 가을, 콘플레이크와 땅콩 버터, 그리고 그 외의 75가지 건강 식품을 최초로 개발한 존 하비 켈로그 박사(Dr. John Harvey Kellogg: 안소니 홉킨스 분)는 미시간주에 자리잡은 BATTLE CREEK에서 400여명을 수용할 수 있는 병원 겸 요양원을 운영하고 있다. 해마다 미국 부유층이 이 요양원(THE SAN)을 찾는데 이들은 지극히 건전하고 건강한 삶을 희망하는 사람들이다. 켈로그 박사 요양원에서는 열띤 강의가 환자들을 주목 시키고 있다. 말똥과 고급 레스토랑 비프 스테이크를 현미경으로 비교하면서 득실거리는 세균을 확대시켜 그의 열렬한 팬들에게 강의 중이다. 켈로그 박사는 자신이 발명한 기구와 특유의 감방식 식이요법으로 국민 건강 보호의 선구자로 부각한다. 단식과 하루에도 수차례씩 행해지는 관장 그리고 우유와 곡식물로 모든 식사를 해결하는 식이요법은 배틀 크릭에서 벌서 전설적인 사업이 되어 있다. 남편 윌(William Lightbody: 매튜 브로데릭 분)과 아내 엘레노어(Eleanor Lightbody: 브리지트 폰다 분)는 복잡한 식생활 및 성생활의 문제를 안고 온 부부, 곤욕스러운 치료법을 겪는 내성적인 남편 윌과 새로운 치료법이라면 뭐든지 시도하는데...
