존 르트어는 그의 절친한 친구인 앤이 운영하는 마약 딜러의 판매책이다. 세월이 지날 수록 마약문화가 유행으로 치닫게 되게 되어 죤의 인생에는 일대 전환기가 온다. 마침 그때 콜럼비아 대학생이 마약 관련사건으로 살해되자 경찰도 중산층 딜러에게 관심을 집중시키게 되고 존과 그의 일당은 방향 전환을 모색한다.
