제이크는 심한 악몽을 가끔 경험하는 것을 제외하곤 너무도 평범한 대학생이다. 21살이 되는 생일날 절친한 친구인 콘래드, 다코타와 ˝패스웨이˝란 컴퓨터 게임을 하게 된다. 자신의 전화번호를 입력하면 과거는 물론 미래까지 알려주고 방향을 알려주는 신기한 전화가 걸려온다는 이상한 게임. 세 친구는 게임에 참여하고 스스로의 고민을 덜어주는 전화를 받게 된다. 하지만 전화를 받은 콘래드와 다코타는 죽이고 싶도록 미웠던 사람들을 죽이고 자신도 처참하게 자살한다. 도움을 주던 보안관마저 사고로 죽자 제이크는 ˝패스웨이˝의 비밀을 파헤치기 시작하고 자신의 끔찍한 출생의 비밀을 알게 되는데...
