1958년, 선셋 파크로 불린 여섯 블록 크기의 거리는 '듀스'라는 소년 갱단과 '벨벳'이라는 시끄럽고 독립적인 소녀 갱단의 놀이터로 통했다. 서로의 영역을 인정하는 두 조직은 무질서 속에 나름의 공조체제를 갖고 거리의 평화를 유지하고 있다. 그러나 조직적인 범죄와 마약, 폭력을 몰고 온 공격적인 갱단 '바이퍼'로 인해 이 거리는 순식간에 혼란에 빠진다. 한편, '듀스' 조직의 리더인 리온에게는 두 동생이 있다. 동생 바비는 리온을 숭배하며 조직을 함께 이끌어가나, 막내인 앨리는 '바이퍼'가 제공한 마약에 유혹을 받고 죽음을 맞았따. 여기 새로 이사온 폴리타 가족은 아이들이 병든 어머니를 간호하며 지내고 있다. 폴리타가의 딸이자 '벨벳'의 리더인 애니는, 바비가 자신을 이 진탕같은 생활에서 구출해줄 유일한 인물로 점찍는다. 바비 역시 그녀에게 매혹되어서 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 그런데 '바이퍼' 조직의 멤버인 애니의 오빠 지미는 자신의 조직에 적대적인 '듀스'가 눈에 가시같은 존재이다. 게다가 자신의 여동생과 가깝게 지내는 것을 더 이상 두고 볼 수 없어 강압적으로 둘 사이를 떼어놓으려 한다. 두 사람이 눈에 띄기만 하면 개인적으로, 또는 집단적으로 공격을 가하면서 '듀스' 조직과 첨예하게 대립하게 된다.
