마을에서의 일들로 로마에서 고위성직자가 된 돈 까밀로. 하지만 그의 마음속엔 마을의 향수가 가득하다. 숙모님을 뵈러 가는 기차 안에서 우연히 빼뽀네를 만나게 되고, 마을이 더욱 그리워진 돈 까밀로는 마을로 향한다. 시의 집짓기 사업으로 이 둘은 다시 맞닥뜨리게 되는 등 여러 가지 사건이 일어나지만 데탕트를 외치며 이들 사이에도 평화의 조짐이 조금씩 보이는데...
