1944년, 2차 세계대전은 클라이막스로 접어든다. 연합군은 프랑스로 진군하며 독일을 무찌를 준비를 하지만, 월밍턴 홈가드의 사기는 침체를 벗어나지 못한다. 그들의 새로운 미션 – 도버 군 기지를 순찰하는 것 – 은 그들의 명성을 되찾고 사기를 돋울 멋진 기회가 되겠지만, 글래머러스한 저널리스트 로즈 윈터스가 그들에 대한 기사를 쓰기 위해 나타나면서 홈가드 병사들 사이에는 긴장이 감돌고 지역의 주민들에게도 비상이 걸린다. 게다가 MI5가 월밍턴에서 베를린으로 보낸 라디오 시그널을 발견하게 되면서 스파이의 존재에 대한 위협이 드러나게 되는데! 전쟁의 결과는 위기에 몰리고 영웅이라 불리기엔 살짝 부족한 이들이 신뢰를 얻기 위해 나설 차례가 된다.
