피부에 붉은 딱지가 생겨 굳어지면서 마비가 일어나는 끔찍한 피부병으로 병원에 입원한 범죄소설 작가 댄. 그는 마치 온갖 토핑이 된 인간 피자처럼 보인다. 사지를 움직이지도 못할 만큼 고통스러운 상황에서 그가 견딜 수 있는 방법은 자신이 한때 썼던 누아르 소설 「노래하는 탐정」의 이야기 속으로 도망치는 것뿐이다. 댄의 상상 속에서 현실의 의사들과 간호사들, 친척들은 모두 소설 속 주인공들로 변하고, ‘Walking in the Rain', ’Doggie in the Window' 등 50년대 히트곡들이 깔리면서 그의 판타지는 점점 더 달콤해져 간다.
