거의 1년 동안을 무위도식하며 지내고 있는 남편이 있는 넬리는 어느 날 친구인 재클린을 만나러 갔다가 재클린의 옛 애인인 피에르를 만난다. 전직 판사인 피에르는 현재 사업가로서 성공한 상태. 남편의 실직 상태로 인해 재정적인 위기에 처한 넬리에게 피에르는 선뜻 3만 프랑을 빌려주는데, 결국 남편과 헤어지게 된 넬리는 피에르의 집에서 타이핑과 원고 수정을 도와주며 그곳에 머물게 된다. 자신의 글에 냉정하고 예리한 지적을 하는 넬리에게 피에르는 어느새 끌리고 말지만, 넬리는 출판 일로 만나게 된 뱅상과 가까워지기 시작한다.
