조 오튼은 어린시절부터 케네스 할리웰와 육체적으로나 정신적으로 관계를 맺어 오고 있다. 함께 극작가의 길로 들어서게 되고, 성격이 달랐던 두 사람의 사이는 조 오튼이 1960년대 영국에서 큰 히트를 치자 더욱 소원해지기 시작하고 급기야 죽음으로 이어진다. 1967년 자신의 연인에게 살해당한 영국의 극작가이자 게이였던 조 오튼의 생애를 그린 영화이다. 스티븐 프리어즈가 연출을 맡았으며 1987년 깐느영화제 예술공헌상을 수상하기도 했다.
