戦争によって“意識ある肉塊”と化したひとりの青年を描いたD・トランボの小説を自身の脚色・初監督で完成させたトランボ渾身の反戦ドラマ。ジョーは今、野戦病院のベッドで静かに横たわっている。第一次大戦の中、彼はほとんどの器官を失う大怪我を負いここに運ばれてきたのだ。真の暗闇の中でジョーは想う。釣り好きだった父と過ごした日々や、出征前夜に恋人と交わした愛の営み……。やがてひとりの看護婦がジョーの胸に書き記した文字によって彼は外界との繋がりを持つのだが……。
