娘を突然誘拐された父親の、事件発生の朝から結着がつく翌日の明け方までの25時間にわたる必死の追跡を描く。 ニューヨークの朝。元警官でトラック運転手のジョン・ボイド（ジェイムス・ブローリン）は、夜勤を終え、アパートに帰った。妻と別れ、娘のキャシー（アビー・ブルーストーン）と2人暮しの彼は、その日誕生日のキャシーにバレエの切符をプレゼントすると、彼女を学校まで送っていった。その頃、ガス・ソルティック（クリフ・ゴーマン）は、ある金持ちの不動産屋の娘を誘拐して身代金をせしめようと、盗んだ車で待っていた。しかし、彼は勘違いしてまちがって、ボイドの娘キャシーを車に引きずり込んでしまう。
