17世紀のイギリスの物語。外国に亡命中であったクランチャリー卿は我児ギンプレーンへの愛着にひかされ国に戻ったが奸臣バーキルフィードロのために殺される。ギンプレーンもバーキルフィードロによってコンプラチコの手に渡され医師ハードクオノンヌはその顔に恐ろしい「笑い」を植えつけた。やがて国王ジェームズ2世はコンプラチコの無道を知ってその一族を国外へ放逐する・・・
