海洋開発企業によって運営されているフロリダ沖の巨大基地では、地質学者のベックをはじめとする計8人のスタッフが職務に従事していた。ある日、海底探査に出た者たちがソ連の艦艇リバイアサンから遺留品を持ち帰る。しかしその中のビンには新種の水中生物を生み出す試薬が入っていた。それを飲んでしまった者の肉体に変化が。人間の知能を持つ生物がベックたちに襲いかかる！
