New York, 1971. Kathie Mc Cormack, une jeune et jolie jeune femme issue d'un milieu modeste, fait la connaissance de Robert Durst, charmant et anticonformiste, dont la famille gère un empire immobilier à Manhattan. Après leur mariage, Robert manifeste une attitude de plus en plus étrange et disparaît parfois plusieurs jours sans explications. D'autre part, les chiens du couple meurent un à un mystérieusement. Consciente du comportement singulier de son mari, Kathie tombe néanmoins sous son emprise et justifie ses accès de colère par la mort tragique de la mère de ce dernier quand il était enfant .
