Une star de cinéma, Lola Burns, décide de changer de vie afin de prouver à son public qu'elle est une femme respectable. Pour ce faire, elle fonde une famille en épousant un aristocrate et en adoptant un enfant. Mais lorsque son agent entre en scène, rien ne va plus. Ce dernier alimente la presse avec de faux scandales. La vie simple dont rêvait alors la jeune artiste se transforme petit à petit en véritable cauchemard médiatique.
