M. Peabody est la personne la plus intelligente au monde. Il est à la fois lauréat du prix Nobel, champion olympique, grand chef cuisinier… et il se trouve aussi être un chien ! Bien qu’il soit un génie dans tous les domaines, M. Peabody est sur le point de relever son plus grand défi : être père. Pour aider Sherman, son petit garçon adoptif, à se préparer pour l’école, il décide de lui apprendre l’histoire et construit alors une machine à voyager dans le temps. Les choses commencent à mal tourner quand Sherman enfreint les règles et perd accidentellement dans le temps Penny, sa camarade de classe.
