Matt Masters, un impresario, et son bras droit emmènent leur cirque en Europe. Ils espèrent y retrouver Lili Alfredo, une femme trapéziste disparue quatorze ans plutôt après la mort de son mari, le grand Flying Alfredo, car elle se sent responsable de cette mort. Lili est la mère de Toni Alfredo, l'actuelle étoile du cirque. Après une longue traversée, l'arrivée à Barcelone est catastrophique : un accident détruit la plupart des équipements, laissant Matt Masters désemparé. À Madrid, Lili assiste en cachette à une représentation du spectacle.
