Le capitaine Harry Flashman (Malcolm McDowell) de l'armée britannique est un goujat, un lâche et un débauché qui semble toujours se montrer héroïque par inadvertance. Alors qu'il rompt avec la célèbre courtisane Lola Montez (Florinda Bolkan), Harry est recruté contre son gré par Otto Von Bismarck (Oliver Reed) pour remplacer un prince prussien sosie afin d'aider Bismarck à étendre son emprise sur les duchés allemands. Mais Bismarck a quelque chose de plus sinistre en tête pour Harry et le Prince.
