C’est à Key West fin 1936 que Martha Gellhorn et Ernest Hemingway se rencontrent. S’il est déjà l’écrivain reconnu qui rend compte de son temps, elle est une pionnière, correspondante de guerre et travailleuse acharnée. Née au coeur de la guerre civile espagnole, leur liaison passionnée s’épanouit de l’Amérique à la Chine. Le magnétisme du couple marié en 1940 lui ouvre les portes d’Hollywood et des cercles littéraires sans oublier celles de la Maison Blanche. Mais le mariage du maître de la littérature et de la journaliste engagée est aussi tumultueux que les conflits du monde dont ils sont témoins. La seule guerre qui aura finalement raison de leur amour est celle qui éclate bientôt entre eux.
