1978, Barry Seal, un pilote chevronné, s'ennuie ferme dans l'aviation civile et cherche l'aventure. Monty Schafer va lui donner de quoi pimenter son existence. Il lui propose en effet de réaliser des livraisons spéciales pour le compte de la CIA. Entre blanchiment d'argent et transports pour le cartel de Pablo Escobar, ces activités ne sont pas bien légales. Les affaires marchent rapidement très fort et l'argent coule à flots. Mais Barry Seal, grand amateur de Cadillac, ne tarde pas à être dans le collimateur des autorités et de ses clients, au point que la sécurité de sa famille n'est plus assurée.
