Dans le Montana des années 1914-1918, l'histoire d'Alfred, Tristan et Samuel, trois frères, qui ont été élevés par leur père William Ludlow, colonel en retraite. Le temps passe et Samuel le cadet des frères se fiance et présente l'élue de son cœur, Susannah, à toute la famille. Ses frères tombent immédiatement sous le charme de la demoiselle.
