À peine est-elle installée dans sa nouvelle maison que la petite Coraline se retrouve livrée à elle-même par ses parents plongés dans le travail. Wybie, son jeune voisin avenant, voudrait bien l'aider à tromper son ennui. Mais Coraline préfère broyer du noir. Partie explorée par dépit son nouveau chez soi, elle découvre une porte secrète débouchant sur un mur de brique. La nuit venue, elle retourne y jeter un coup d'oeil et trouve cette fois un passage qui la conduit dans une réalité parallèle où d'autres parents, plus attentionnés ceux-là, l'accueillent et l'invitent à rester. Coraline, tentée, ignore toutefois que derrière cette façade de bonheur idyllique se cache un terrible danger.
